All-New 2026 “Hands-on” Complex Clinical Case Scenarios - A Bariatric Safe Patient Handling and Early Mobility Living Laboratory
Join us for this completely updated unique opportunity to learn from clinical experts and enhance your knowledge in the BSPH&EM field. The BSPH&EMLL is an innovative engagement and knowledge-building activity designed to promote an interdisciplinary approach to BSPH&EM built on the simulation principles of See One, Do One, Teach One. Participants will work together in teams to carry out various patient handling tasks that provoke critical thinking, team building and skill development. The BSPH&EMLL includes case study discussions and clinical scenarios with hands-on demonstrations of various mobility tasks using simulated plus-size patients. Participants will join an interdisciplinary care team to develop evidence-based BSPH&EM strategies for accomplishing mobility tasks using safe patient handling practices. Scenarios will address issues such as pressure injury prevention and treatment, fall prevention and recovery, critical care concerns, and emergency evacuation skills and planning, all through the lens of safe, equitable patient handling. Lunch is not included.

Integrated Workshop: Skin, Emotion, and the Whole Patient - Complex Clinical and Relational Competencies for Treating Patients with Obesity
This integrated workshop explores the intersection of physiological and emotional dimensions of patient care in individuals with obesity, focusing on the skin as a vital organ system, and the emotional context of healing and care delivery. Attendees will learn to recognize how excess adiposity impacts skin health and function while also addressing how emotions such as frustration, self-blame, or stigma affect patient engagement, compliance, and recovery. The session emphasizes empathy, active listening, and team collaboration to ensure that patient care is both technically proficient and emotionally informed. Participants will examine clinical aspects of obesity-related skin conditions such as pressure injuries, skin fold management, lymphedema, lipedema, and moisture-associated skin damage, and the psychosocial challenges that accompany chronic illness, body image, and care interactions. Through evidence-based content, case scenarios, and facilitated discussions, the session connects clinical wound and skin care with the emotional intelligence and communication skills necessary to achieve optimal outcomes.
